The impressive Lower-Kinabatangan River sustains a globally significant ecosystem, recognised as Sabah's first and Malaysia's largest RAMSAR site. Besides being the habitat for Borneo's native orangutan and proboscis monkey, the adjacent forest stands as one of only two locations worldwide where 10 primate species coexist.
Embarking on a river cruise during dawn or dusk provides the prime chance to witness the vibrant wildlife. Encounter the Bornean pygmy elephant grazing along the riverbanks, marvel at the acrobatics of the Proboscis leaping between trees, and perhaps catch a glimpse of a wild orangutan. Do keep an eye out for saltwater crocodiles, often visible along the riverbanks. For a more exhilarating experience, spot their eyes peering just above the water (from a safe distance, of course).
